Portland in late June

The longest light of the year

June 26 falls five days after the solstice. That Saturday the sun rises over Casco Bay at 5:00 a.m. and sets at 8:27 p.m., almost fifteen and a half hours of daylight. The moon won't rise until after midnight, so the stars will have the sky to themselves.

The small light on the horizon flashes once every four seconds, the same as Portland Head Light, which has marked the way into Portland Harbor since 1791.

By air

Portland International Jetport (PWM) is a short drive from downtown. Boston Logan is about two hours south.

By rail

The Amtrak Downeaster runs from Boston's North Station to Portland in about two and a half hours.

By road

Portland is about two hours north of Boston by car, up I-95.

Staying over

Late June is a busy time in Portland, so it's worth booking a room early.
